In the last three years, I have observed teachers transform their classrooms by engaging students in the inquiry process and I have repeatedly sensed a need for me (and the teachers) to better understand the art of questioning. In my experience, teachers who use inquiry-based models of education likely ask more questions of their students than teachers who do not. Understanding questions and knowing how to ask good ones seems imperative to enacting an inquiry-based approach to teaching.

Today I received a brochure from Teachers College Press that highlighted some of their recently published books, and naturally, the book Effective Questioning Strategies in the Classroom: A Step-by-Step Approach to Engaged Thinking and Learning K-8 caught my attention. Unfortunately I can’t find a digital edition anywhere.

I thought I’d write about this book here in case any of you have a felt need for this resource given the increased inquiry activities in your classrooms. However, I have yet to read it, so I can’t weigh in on whether it met my expectations. I would love to hear your thoughts if any of you get the book and read it first!
